Children and Youth Activities

The Youth Forum meets weekly on Sunday mornings. This session led by various members of our Sunday School volunteers covers a lesson being read in the Service, and often has a connected activity. Youth Forum members track their participation, service and attendance during the year!

Additionally, each month the Youth Forum participates in an activity that can be service-based, bonding, or educational. Click here to download the 2013 Schedule of Events.

St. Barnabas enjoys a dynamic Sunday School program that serves over 25 children from nursery age to eighth grade.

The goals of our Sunday School program are to help our children:

  • Know about and experience God’s infinite love
  • Belong in the Body of Christ through meaningful relationships and significant contributions in a safe and loving environment
  • Learn through Scripture, lessons, and by application what it means to be a Christian.

Ours is an inter-generational program that includes adult teaching teams which staff five classrooms every Sunday on a rotational basis for the first 20 minutes.  These lessons are followed by age-appropriate activities led by adult activity leaders for the next 20 minutes.  The children join their parents in church for the final 20 minutes of the service.  During special times of the year like Advent and Easter, we also have guest readers join the Sunday School classes.   In all we have over 65 dedicated, loving adults that work with our children.

St. Barnabas Sunday School presents a Christmas pageant each year, usually on a Sunday afternoon before Christmas.  All children are invited to be part of the pageant, from the smallest in the Nursery to the teens. The pageant is followed by a potluck supper and fellowship time which includes all “children” from babies to 95-year-olds.

The Great Vigil of Easter is also celebrated with a pageant performed by the Sunday School children.  There is no greater way to share the joy of Easter than to see our lively children portray the story of creation, the parting of the Red Sea, and the ……….. in their own creative style.

Kids’ Night Out (KNO) is a special opportunity for children both from within our congregation as well as from the broader community to come together for fun, games, food, crafts and a movie.  It also gives their parents an opportunity to enjoy some adult time, whether it’s eating pizza at home in front of the TV, or grabbing a quick dinner and movie .  Kids’ Night Out is staffed by 12-15 energetic adult volunteers.  It’s held the first Friday of every month from October through June from 5:45 – 10:00 pm.  For more information, contact….

Vacation Bible School is held for a week each summer for children from preschool age through fifth grade. The last two summers, we’ve hosted a “Chronicles of Narnia” theme. We are looking forward to planning for VBS 2013

Periodically, the children in Sunday School participate in special projects. Below is a short video of their recent efforts to assemble Hygiene Bags for the local homeless children.
